SL BLACK STUDIOS · INDEPENDENT GAMES

THE HUMAN BEHIND THE GAMES

One person.
Many, many ideas.

A solo Canadian studio with a love of world-building, systems, and small, complete games.

Illustrated portrait of Shelby Lynn BlackFounder. Designer. Entire team.

SHELBY LYNN BLACK

CEO, founder,
lead designer, etc.

Shelby Lynn Black is currently running the studio solo and writing her own profile in third person. It’s weird.

Shelby Lynn Black has worked in the film and television industry as an art department DGC member and set designer since 2014. She has worked on designing worlds for award-winning series such as The Handmaid’s Tale and The Umbrella Academy.

She loves bringing that same passionate world-building mixed with a love of systems-building to game-making.

During the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, she had waaaayyy too much time on her hands and began to learn Unreal Engine… and became hooked. She then began to have way too many game ideas.

It was game over. She pivoted SL Black Studios into a game studio.

THE STUDIO

Complete games.
Made with heart.

SL Black Studios is a small, currently solo indie game company founded and based in Canada.

The studio is focused on small, full-experience mobile games aimed at accessibility and fun. No microtransactions, just engaging gameplay on a portable device.

Poot Patrol is available on iOS. Borough is in development, and ShoNiMals is an early prototype.

INDEPENDENT GAMES · MADE IN CANADA

Small worlds.
Made with curiosity.

A home for the studio’s games, artwork, and development journal.

  1. Make the next step clear.

Poot Patrol is available on iOS. Borough is in development. ShoNiMals is an early prototype. Each now has its own page and a relevant next step.

  2. Keep the personality; give it room.

Larger artwork, shorter introductions, consistent navigation, and a readable journal let the games and the solo-studio story do the talking.

  3. Preserve what is already there.

The full dev-log text and existing privacy policy are carried over. Original journal dates and URLs are preserved. Third-party mood-board references are linked rather than presented as studio work.

  4. Keeping in touch.

The contact form saves messages in a protected studio inbox on this Site. Tester interest is saved alongside contact messages in the protected studio inbox. Contact details and storage information are available in the privacy policy.

The studio’s latest game information and original journal posts live here. ShoNiMals’ typographic panel is a design treatment, not new game artwork. Contact submissions are stored privately on this Site. No email is sent by the contact form.
